Hello Maplewood Farm Fans:
April showers bring May flowers and we can certainly see that with all the flowers blooming and smelling their sweet fragrance wafting through the air. Not only are we are having some amazingly beautiful sunny weather, it’s also one of the best times to visit the farm. Our busy season has started so see below for upcoming events, what is happening at the farm, contests, and photos from past events.
Sheep Shearing Event
10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Sheep Shearing! It’s that time again. Join us for our 33rd Annual Sheep Shearing Festival. Lorea Tomsin and the staff with be shearing the flock for the summer. Bill McCallion will be on hand with his world-famous duck herding Border Collies for a couple of demonstrations. Special event rates apply. Name the Calf Contest Winner
Our name the Calf Contest winner is Ayla! Ayla suggested the winning name for Lima’s new calf. Here is a picture of Marley with the Farmers. Congratulations, Ayla!
48 Hour Film on the Farm Contest
OPEN TO ALL AGES! The 48 hour Farm Film contest will begin officially at 7:00PM on FRIDAY, MAY 31st, 2013, and end at 7:00PM on SUNDAY, JUNE 2nd. All filmed footage must be shot within this 48 hour period.
- The designation of a specific area of Maplewood Farm where AT LEAST ONE SCENE of the finished film must be shot. Each team will be allotted a 3-hour window on Saturday, June 1st, for the purpose of filming this scene.
- A designated prop and a line of dialogue that must be featured in the finished film. Please list these in the film’s end credits.
- Copies of the contest General Release Form must be signed by all participating cast and crew and submitted with your finished film.
It’s up to each team to handle the writing, casting, scheduling, shooting, and editing of their film over the next two days! Use the farm elements provided in any way you want. But remember, they are part of the challenge, so they must be part of your film!
All finished films must be submitted NO LATER than 7:00 pm, Sunday, June 2nd, 2013.
Then, toast your success, catch up on your sleep, and get ready to hit the red carpet at the Maplewood Farm Film Showcase on SATURDAY, JUNE 8th, 2013. All films from the contest will be screened in competition with each other for the coveted “Golden Goat” awards:
- Best Picture
- Best Actor
- Best Actress
- Best Editing
- Best Cinematography
- Audience Choice
The film that wins Best Picture will receive a $300 CASH PRIZE, and there will be other film industry related door prizes awarded for the other categories!

Behind the Scenes
Plenty of space still available for Behind the Scenes onMay 21 and 25, 2013. “Behind the Scenes” offers you and kids a wonderful experience being a farmer at Maplewood Farm.
Children get a ‘Behind the Scenes’ look into the operation of the Farm. Activities include egg collection and washing, animal grooming, setting up feed and exploring “Staff Only” areas. Sessions go for about one hour.
